Man United to offer England international in exchange for John Stones

Manchester United are plotting a sensational swap deal that would see Everton defender John Stones complete a move to Old Trafford, the Metro report.

The 21-year-old has handed in a transfer request in an apparent attempt to force through a move away from Goodison Park, the Daily Mail reports. Having made three bids previously (via Mail), it seemed that Chelsea would be the ones that would prise him away from Merseyside. However, the Red Devils are planning a last-ditch attempt to bag the former Barnsley man’s signature.

The Metro suggest that Louis van Gaal is willing to offer Phil Jones to Roberto Martinez as part of the deal, after the Toffees turned down a similar bid which instead involved Jonny Evans.

Should the Dutchman decide to make such an offer, it would prove to be a surprise that van Gaal is willing to let Jones leave.

The 23-year-old made 22 appearances in the Premier League last season, and while injuries have allowed Chris Smalling to become the leader of the back line, there seemed to be hope that their partnership could develop into one as reliable as that that was enjoyed by Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.

And while Everton will be less than keen on losing Stones, the prospect of being given an England international in exchange may be enough to tempt them into a sale.
