Swansea vs Man Utd – Premier League preview and team news

Two sides who boast unbeaten records after two matches meet at the Liberty Stadium as Swansea City aim to have the better of Manchester United for the fourth time in five meetings in all competitions.

There was a tinge of disappointment for Garry Monk and his players after they were held to a draw by Sunderland last weekend, having missed a number of chances to put the game beyond doubt during a period of dominance early in the second half. On the bright side, it was another positive, dynamic performance which saw Bafetimbi Gomis continue his excellent run of scoring which now stands at eight goals in nine Premier League outings.

The key to Swansea’s success in doing the double over the Red Devils last term was a determined resilience at the back and efficiency in the final third. Ki-Sung Yueng was the chief tormentor with goals in both fixtures, and the talented South Korean midfielder has timed his return from injury ideally to play a part here. He joins an array of dangerous attacking players who will almost certainly give the United defence and goalkeeper Sergio Romero their biggest test so far.

Indeed, the Argentine has made a strong start to his Man Utd career, keeping four clean sheets in five games as he continues to be selected ahead of David De Gea, about whom transfer rumours remain rife. Only his teammate Michael Carrick has been able to beat him, putting through his own goal in the first leg of the Champions League qualifier with Club Brugge, a setback to which Louis van Gaal’s men responded superbly, hitting seven without reply for a convincing aggregate victory.

Going into the second leg in Belgium on Wednesday, captain Wayne Rooney was under close scrutiny for going 10 games without a goal stretching back to April, but he responded to his critics emphatically with a magnificent hat-trick. As a team, United will hope to transfer that potency in front of goal to the league, where they have managed to find the net only twice in 270 minutes of football; firing a disappointing blank at home to Newcastle United.

With Ki back available, Swansea have a fully-fit squad available for this encounter, but are likely to make changes from the side that won against York City in the Capital One Cup.

Marouane Fellaini returns to domestic action for Man Utd after serving a three-match ban and Marcos Rojo could make his first appearance of the season having regained his fitness. Phil Jones misses out through illness.

Last Meeting: Swansea ensured a famous day in their history by completing the league double over Man Utd for the first time, despite going behind to Ander Herrera’s low shot from just outside the penalty area. The response from the hosts was immediate, with Ki Sung-Yueng latched on to Jonjo Shelvey’s pull-back to find the far corner. Bafetimbi Gomis got the winner 17 minutes from time when he deflected in Shelvey’s long-range shot.
