Chelsea tried to stop Manchester United’s deadline day move for Anthony Martial, by sensationally matching the Red Devils’ offer for the Monaco man, according to the Daily
The 19-year-old became the world’s most expensive teenager following his £36m move to Old Trafford (via Star), despite beginning the window as a name that few in England had actually heard of – even United skipper Wayne Rooney had to ask Morgan Schneiderlin who he was when he heard that the Frenchman could be his new strike partner (via Daily Mail).
But had Louis van Gaal been a bit more sluggish in his attempts to bring him to the Premier League, Martial may have been lining up against the Dutchman’s side this season as the Blues desperately tried to hijack United’s move.
The Star report that the champions made the same offer for the forward, only for it to be rejected by the principality side as they had already brokered a deal with United.
And while the fee would have automatically meant that the former Lyon man would have had a lot to prove wherever he went, a move to Stamford Bridge may have ensured that he was under slightly less pressure.
Jose Mourinho already has Diego Costa, Radamel Falcao, and Loic Remy at his disposal – while Pedro could also be used up front – meaning that Martial could be given time to settle in, and he wouldn’t need to hit the ground running instantly as his teammates could take the responsibility of finding the back of the net.
However, at United, it is just Martial and Wayne Rooney, and with the England skipper failing to open his Premier League account for the season, the youngster will be under almost immediate pressure to start repaying his fee.
