Man United made late approach for reported Chelsea target Charlie Austin

Manchester United made a late attempt to bring Queens Park Rangers striker Charlie Austin to Old Trafford this summer, according to the Daily Express.

After a strong summer for the Red Devils, it appeared that the smart thing for Louis van Gaal to do in the final days of the window would be to find at least one new striker.

While his squad currently boasts several attacking players capable of featuring up front, they went into transfer deadline day with just Wayne Rooney as the only natural forward in the side following the departures of Robin van Persie, Radamel Falcao, and Javier Hernandez.

And while they would go on to add Monaco prospect Anthony Martial on deadline day, there is little question that many United fans would have liked to have seen one more goalscorer arrive to provide further depth.

It seems that Austin could well have been that man. However, United decided against a move when they were told that it would cost £15m to take him away from the Loftus Road outfit (via Express). In a situation that somewhat mirrored the saga regarding David de Gea, United felt that QPR’s valuation was unjustifiable given that the former Burnley man has just one year left on his deal with the Championship side (via Express).
