Man United captain Wayne Rooney will miss the Red Devils’ Champions League group-stage opener against PSV Eindhoven due to injury, BBC
The 29-year-old missed the victory over Liverpool after tweaking his hamstring in training, and Louis van Gaal has decided not to rush him back for the clash in the Netherlands (via BBC Sport).
The decision from the manager has probably been made with the club’s lack of attacking options in mind. Had the Dutchman risked Rooney for the clash, he ran the risk of seeing his skipper sustain a further injury which may have ruled him out for longer than initially feared.
Rooney’s absence means that Anthony Martial is set to be awarded his first start for United, the Daily Mirror report.
The Frenchman will be looking to build upon his impressive cameo appearance against Liverpool, which saw the 19-year-old seal the victory with a well-taken strike.
Now United fans have had a glimpse of what he is capable of, they may well be expecting a similar moment of magic against the Dutch champions.
