It’s a debate that will probably go on forever. Who’s the best footballer: Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi?
Still, world-class defender Giorgio Chiellini gave his take on the discussion by revealing his tactics to defend both star players, giving the edge to the Barcelona forward.
The 31-year-old spoke to journalist Pierluigi Pardo at a sponsor’s event, as reported by Football-Italia, discussing Juventus’ season so far. The Bianconeri have recovered from a poor start to the season, sitting three points clear at the top of Serie A and having already secured a place in the Coppa Italia final.
Juventus are also up against Bayern Munich in the round of 16 in the Champions League, securing a 2-2 draw in Turin and facing the Bundesliga gians on March 16.
“We’re not totally satisfied yet,” Chiellini admitted. “We’re close to a lot of things, but we haven’t done anything yet. There’s still plenty to do, with Sassuolo, Bayern and Torino [their next three games]. In 10 days everything could change.”
Later during the interview, the Italian international explained how he defends Ronaldo.
“How do you mark Cristiano Ronaldo? You try not to leave him alone, don’t let him shoot on his right foot.”
An interesting tactic, but how about Messi?
“And Lionel Messi? Just make the sign of the cross…”
That just settles the debate, because according to Chiellini there is a way to defend the Portuguese, while there is really no way to defend the Argentine.
Chiellini joined Juventus during the summer of 2005, as the Old Lady payed £5.48 million to Fiorentina. The centre-back has been capped 82 times for the Italian national team.
