Dortmund considering improved Manchester United offer for Mkhitaryan

Manchester United have submitted a £30 million bid to Borussia Dortmund for Henrirkh Mkhitaryan, with the German club’s chief executive Hans – Joachim Watzke confirming that offer is under serious consideration, as reported by The Guardian.

Previous indications from Watzke were that Mkhitaryan was not for sale, despite the 27-year-old rejecting the opportunity to extend his current Dortmund contract, which has just 12 months to run. Dortmund officials are understood to have hoped that Mkhitaryan would stay at the club for the remaining year of his contract.

However they have subsequently surrendered that and now aim to secure the highest possible transfer fee for the talented playmaker, with Manchester United’s £30 million offer understood to currently be the best that Dortmund have received.

Decision expected soon

A decision as to whether or not to accept that offer is set to be made by the Dortmund board before the club’s players reconvene for pre-season training at the start of next week, according to Watzke.

“We are back in training on Monday, so we will decide at the weekend. I have contacted the relevant people, we will weigh things up then the board will make the decision, definitely at the weekend,” said Watzke, who although resigned to losing Mkhitaryan has the consolation of having already secured an excellent young replacement for the Armenian.

Specifically the talented 19-year-old French internationalist Ousmane Dembele signed a five year contract with Dortmund from Stade Rennes at the start of June, at which time Watzke still harboured ambition of convincing Mkitaryan to stay at the Signal Iduna Park.

Should agree to sell Mkhitaryan to Manchester United for £30m, they would make a £6.5m profit on Armenia’s captain and record goal-scorer, who they signed from Shaktar Donetsk for £23.5m in June 2013.

As such the proposed deal appears to represent good business for both clubs, with the potential for it to be finalised in time for Mkhitaryan to start pre-season training with Manchester United on June 11 being very real.
