Manchester United have completed the signing of Henrikh Mkhitaryan, as Jose Mourinho continues working to reshape the club’s squad ahead of the new season, according to the club’s website.
Trio of new signings with a fourth to potentially follow
Following the arrivals of defender Eric Bailly from Villarreal & striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who was a free agent after his departure from PSG, Mkhitaryan becomes Mourinho’s third new recruit, with the Portuguese manager enthusiastic about adding a fourth.
“We decided four targets. From those four, we have three and whilst we do not have the fourth, we are still working hard, myself, the structure, Ed Woodward, the owners we are working hard,” said Mourinho who succeeded Louis Van Gaal as Manchester United manager at the beginning of last month.
Since then as well as signing three players, the former Porto, Real Madrid and two-time Chelsea manager has identified several other targets. Among those are Blaise Matuidi, Paul Pogba and Will Hughes, as reported by the Independent.
Both Matuidi and Pogba are currently representing France at Euro 2016, so any move involving either player would require to take place after Les Bleus participation in the tournament ends.
Duo to potentially exit Old Trafford
Whilst interested in making another addition to his squad, Mourinho also appears keen to sell two players who featured prominently under his predecessor Van Gaal.
Neither Daley Blind nor Juan Mata are believed to feature in Mourinho’s plans for the 2015-16 season, since the duo’s style does not fit with that he prefers for the position’s they play, Sky Sports revealed.
Whilst Blind lacks the level of physicality Mourinho values in a centre back, Mata does not possess either the work rate or pace that the Portuguese manager demands of an attacking midfielder.
That perception of Mata was developed during Mourinho’s second spell as Chelsea manager and resulted in him sanctioning the sale of the Spaniard to United for a reported £33.5m in Janaury 2014. As such since Mourinho is understood to still hold the same view of Mata, the former Valencia player is set for a move away from Old Trafford, with Everton being a potential destination, as outlined on ADL.
Mourinho shaping new-look United
As such, Mourinho is steadily shaping his squad ahead of the new season with preparations for that now officially underway with United’s players having reconvened for pre-season training.
Ultimately the look of United’s team under Mourinho will be markedly different from that developed by Van Gaal, with the Portuguese manager’s three new signings – Bailly, Mkhitaryan and Ibrahimovic set to form part of the spine of his side, which could potentially line-up in a 4-2-3-1 formation as outlined in the Telegraph.
Whichever personnel represent United during the forthcoming season, they will be under the guidance of one of the most respected and masterful manager’s in world football.
