Spanish Under-21’s top group with 2-0 win over Georgia

The Spanish Under-21 team followed up their 7-2 win in Georgia four days ago by comfortably beating the same opponents 2-0 in their second 2013 European Under-21 Championships Group Five qualifier.

Sergio Canales got both goals in Lugo to get Luis Milla’s side off to a flying start in the defence of the crown they won in Denmark in June. Valencia’s on-loan Real Madrid midfielder opened the scoring on 18 minutes from the penalty spot after Athletic Bilbao’s Iker Muniain had been upended by Tarkhnishvili.

However, with the Georgians having altered their usual 4-4-2 system to a more defensive 4-5-1 so as not to be on the receiving end of another trouncing, the Spanish youngsters found goalscoring opportunities much harder to come by than in Thursday’s encounter.
