Owen out of Sunderland match

Manchester United are waiting to see the results of a scan on a thigh injury Michael Owen picked up during his side’s Champions League clash with Otelul Galati on Wednesday night.

The former Liverpool star faces another spell on the sidelines after picking up the injury in the opening minutes of the game against the Romanian side and was forced to come off immediately.

Sir Alex Ferguson revealed that the injury is being assessed and the club don’t know how long the striker will be out of action but the United boss ruled him out of the match against Sunderland this weekend.

He told the Press Association: “We are assessing it this morning. He is having a scan done but he won’t be available for Saturday.

“Hopefully it is not too long but it is a killer because he has started the season very well. His performances in training have been terrific.

“We wouldn’t have scored that goal if Michael had not made his run so it is a bit of a blow.”
