Wenger eyes maximum points over festive period

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has called for his team to use the festive period as a push into the top four, the Press Association reports.

The Gunners are in fifth place and face a relatively easy fixture list heading into the New Year. Arsenal face Wolves, QPR and Fulham in their next three games and nine points from those games would really set a marker to those sides in and around the Gunners. Arsene Wenger realises his side are only two points behind sixth placed Liverpool and any slip-ups will see them fall further behind the race for the Champions League spots.

Wenger has urged the Gunners to focus on what they need and pick up maximum points from these next three games. The Arsenal manager has an injury crisis defensively, but is hoping to see some of his players return in the New Year. Arsenal will need to keep in good form for when their players return and a win against Wolves is vital to start the festive season.

‘We know we have an opportunity to gain a better position on the table. It’s down to us to do our job. In the Premier League, the Christmas period is vital to get your points. We have responded well to our defeat at Man City with a win at Aston Villa, so now it’s down to us to do the job at home and get the points against Wolves on Tuesday. Every game has its own difficult, so what is important for us is to focus on our own game and perform well’, Wenger said.
