Wenger talks of difficult 2011

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has revealed that 2011 was one of his most challenging years in charge of the club, arsenal.com reports.

The Frenchman saw his side beat Barcelona at the Emirates Stadium in February, but had to face some testing times for the rest of the year. The Gunners were riding high at the top of the table last season before their last minute loss to Birmingham City in the Carling Cup final derailed the squad. The Gunners eventually finished fourth last season and then Wenger faced the nightmare situation of losing inspirational captain Cesc Fabregas and midfielder Samir Nasri.

The Gunners’ start to the season also piled more pressure on Wenger and an 8-2 drubbing at the hands of Manchester United saw Arsenal fans call for drastic change. Wenger changed the club’s fortunes and now they are doing better in the league as well as being one of two English sides in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Wenger said: ‘When I look back, it was not the easiest year of my career. The end of last (season) was even more difficult than the rocky time we had at the beginning of this season because it was all doom and gloom, only negatives. This season, we had a very tough time too, but we had something in front of us, we could still fight for something’.
