Despite making 24 appearances this season, Song’s failure to displace Sergio Busquets as Barcelona’s first choice holding central midfielder has limited his playing time and meant that like fellow midfielder Javier Mascherano, he has had to play a number of games in defence for the La Liga giants.
Following his cousin’s declaration that he is unhappy with his role at the club, as reported in The Metro,, there were immediate rumours that a return to Arsenal could be in the pipeline but they were quickly dispelled by Arsene Wenger.
However, with it looking likely that Tottenham players Scott Parker, Tom Huddlestone and Jake Livermore are set to leave the club, midfield reinforcements are a priority for Spurs boss Andre Villas Boas this summer.
Potential stumbling blocks include Barcelona’s eagerness to recoup as much of the £15m they spent on Song as they can; as well as whether or not the player would be willing to sign for Spurs at all due to his loyalty to their local rivals.
