Martinez backs Wigan for league escape and cup joy

Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez is confident that his side can escape relegation from the Premier League – as well as win the FA Cup, according to The Observer.

The Latics came from behind to win 3-2 at West Bromwich Albion on Saturday to lift themselves to within two points of Premier League safety with a game in hand on the likes of Newcastle United and Norwich City above them.

And with the FA Cup final against Manchester City to come on Saturday, Martinez believes his team can experience end-of-season elation once again.

Martinez said: “Every other club fear to lose something. We don’t. We don’t fight to avoid relegation. It is not a negative, it is a positive. As a football club, we win the title every time we stay in the league.

We have got a big-club mentality in those players. We are ready to win both trophies, the league and the FA Cup.

Wigan will have to make do without wing-back Jean Beausejour at Wembley after the Chilean picked up a hamstring injury in the win over the Baggies.

Martinez said: “These sort of injuries normally take 10 days but we will see if we can get some magic hands working on him.
