The Joe Kinnear saga continues to roll on after the former Newcastle manager claimed that Toon legend Alan Shearer “hasn’t got a clue”, reports The
Kinnear’s re-appointment to the club in the role of director of football has been met with astonishment and bemusement in the days since it was announced, and former Newcastle striker Shearer was critical of the club’s ideas last week.
Shearer briefly managed Newcastle when the Geordies slipped from the Premier League at the end of a campaign which began with Kinnear at the helm, before the latter was forced to leave the role for health reasons.
Kinnear implied that Shearer was responsible for Newcastle’s relegation in 2009, stating outright that the former England star did not have a clue about coaching.
He said: “What Shearer says is diabolical. This is a guy who hasn’t got a clue about coaching.
“The last game of the (2008-09) season he came up with the master idea of playing Damien Duff at left-back.
“Damien is one of the best left-wingers in the business, but can’t tackle. And we went down with an own goal from Damien.
“Shearer keeps slagging me off. He is being disrespectful to me. I am entitled to fight back.”
Shearer had also declared that he felt Alan Pardew’s position of manager at St. James’ Park had been undermined by the appointment, but Kinnear was keen to emphasise that this is not the case at all.
He continued: “If things are going wrong at the club I am accountable and he will be coming through me and not anybody else. Everybody thinks Pardew is under pressure.
“He’s not. I am. I could get sacked.
“The manager – the running of the teams when it comes to the players needed, the selection of players on match days, the tactics and the public face when addressing the supporters via the media – will be Alan Pardew.”
