Mourinho targets Hulk after Chelsea miss out on Falcao

Jose Mourinho will try and bring Zenit St Petersburg’s Brazil international forward Hulk to Chelsea, the Daily Mirror has reported, after the Premier League club missed out to Monaco on the signing of Radamel Falcao from Atletico Madrid.

Hulk moved to Zenit a year ago but has not had a happy time in Russia. The newspaper adds that the ex-Porto player has fallen out with the manager, Luciano Spalletti, while Hulk’s high wage packet has not gone down well with the players already at Zenit. Having paid £40m to sign him, Zenit are now said to be willing to sell Hulk for around £35m.

Mourinho is eager to overhaul his striking options but missed out on Falcao and faces competition from Manchester City for Napoli forward Edinson Cavani. Hulk however would provide Mourinho with more versatility, as he is capable of playing centrally or in a wider berth.

Chelsea can already call on Demba Ba and Fernando Torres and have Romelu Lukaku back from his season-long loan at West Bromwich Albion. But there are concerns over Ba’s tendency to pick up injuries, Torres could be dispensed with by Mourinho and Lukaku could make another temporary move out of the club to play regular football next season.

Hulk, 26, joined Porto after impressing in Japan and spent four years with the Portuguese side. In that time he scored 78 goals in 169 games and helped the club to four Portuguese titles and the 2011 Europa League.
