Fulham confirm loan move for Aston Villa striker Bent

Fulham have completed the signing of Darren Bent on a season-long loan from Aston Villa, BBC Sport has reported. The deal ends months of speculation regarding Bent’s future, after the England international was frozen out at Villa Park.

Despite beginning last season as captain under Paul Lambert at Aston Villa, Bent was soon stripped of that role, and spent much of the campaign on the bench, making just eight starts in the Premier League and falling behind Christian Benteke and Andreas Weimann in the pecking order.

Cottagers boss Martin Jol had been looking to add a striker to his squad this summer, with Dimitar Berbatov and Hugo Rodallega being his only options. The Dutchman previously signed Bent in 2007 while manager of Tottenham Hotspur, and is pleased to have secured the 29-year-old once again.

He said: “He gives us pace up front and I am confident that he will add to our goals scored tally this season. He has shown in the Premier League that he is composed and clinical in front of goal but, even if he is not scoring, he is involved in some good link-up play, creating opportunities for his team-mates.

After interest from Crystal Palace and Newcastle United, Bent becomes Fulham’s sixth notable summer signing, following goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg, defenders Fernando Amorebieta and Sascha Riether, and midfielders Derek Boateng and Adel Taarabt, who is also on a season’s loan, from Queens Park Rangers.
