Manchester City have the chance to move back to within four points of leaders Liverpool as they take on lowly Sunderland at the Etihad Stadium.
On Sunday, Manuel Pellegrini’s side came back well after being the latest victims of another Liverpool first half onslaught, only for Vincent Kompany’s mistake to cost them dearly.
While matters are now out of their hands and defeat at Anfield has made regaining the title a more difficult task, Man City cannot be ruled out, particularly due to the quality they have available, and the fact that the two teams above them must still face each other.
With the games beginning to run out, Sunderland are desperate for points, so may be more adventurous here than they would normally be. The Black Cats played reasonably well against Everton on Saturday but again found scoring goals a problem – at the right end of the pitch. The own goal that condemned them to defeat leaves them four points adrift at the bottom with manager Gustavo Poyet’s future the subject of speculation.
Sergio Aguero could make his first start since February after returning from injury on Sunday, but Yaya Toure misses out along with Matija Nastasic.
Sunderland will be without Phil Bardsley, who serves a two-match ban, while Liam Bridcutt is absent for personal reasons.
