Following much criticism over the club’s current style of play Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has publically announced he will seek a new creative midfielder over the summer, according to Sky
Attention has been heaped on United after West Ham manager Sam Allardyce’s branding of the Red Devils as ‘Long Ball United’, while former player Paul Scholes publically announced his dissatisfaction with the club’s lack of imagination this season.
Van Gaal has continued to insist his side do not play as many long balls as claimed – shown by his dossier of facts he produced in reaction to Allardyce’s comments – only switching tactics as and when he feels it is required.
Wayne Rooney has been forced to drop into a deeper midfield role this season as the Dutchman seeks the right blend in players with Radamel Falcao and Robin van Persie his preferred strike force.
Juan Mata has not performed as consistently as hoped since his big money arrival under David Moyes while Angel Di Maria and Adnan Januzaj are not comfortable in a more central role.
However in a move to seemingly improve upon recent events Van Gaal has announced he will be seeking a creative presence in his midfield in a bid to help his side’s fortunes.
He said: “Signing a creative player should be our priority this summer, I’m looking for balance and I need it in midfield.
“In the last few games I’ve played Adnan Januzaj and Angel Di Maria in the midfield positions, and you need a certain balance for that kind of creative player.
“Radamel Falcao and Robin van Persie are also creative players so then you have four of them, and you still have to look for balance in your team.
“Wayne is playing in midfield because there is no one else. He’s happy to do so otherwise he should come to me and say he’s not, but he never does. He’s always friendly to me and wants to perform.
“But of course when the whole world is writing that he has to be in the striker’s position then he will be thinking ‘hey, maybe’. He’s human.”
