Former Manchester United and England midfielder Bryan Robson believes the much-maligned Angel Di Maria can prove his worth to United next season, reports Sky
The Argentine international was signed for £65M from Real Madrid last summer, and did initially impress with Manchester United. However, his form dwindled, and he’s been used as a substitute in the Red Devils’ last six Premier League games. Manager Louis van Gaal has preferred the likes of Juan Mata and Ashley Young in the attacking positions, and cannot even entrust Di Maria to play central midfield when the side have been suffering an injury crisis.
It’s been a difficult debut season for Di Maria, and rumours have been emerging that Paris Saint-Germain could come in for the playmaker. Robson feels he can still recover and become a key player at Old Trafford, pointing towards a lack of confidence and off the pitch distractions as a reason for his poor form for United.
“Everybody will say below par. He came in and, in the first six or seven games, he just looked fantastic. So whether it’s the environment in England or getting used to the Premier League, his form has dipped and he looks short of confidence. But he is a great player and I’m sure he can get that back the more he gets used to the Premier League and Manchester United and I’m sure he’ll be a great player for United,” he said.
With Di Maria having been dropped from the starting eleven for Manchester United, it caps a woeful debut campaign in England, and has drawn pressure on the club for spending so much last summer.
