The 27-year-old appeared at Durham County Court on Wednesday morning where he was read his charges of three counts of sexual activity with a child under the age of 16 and one count of grooming.

Johnson looked sombre in a grey suit as he spoke only to offer his plea of not guilty.

Johnson was arrested in March after being accused of engaging in sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl, and the three counts of that activity are believed to have taken place at two locations on one night in County Durham.

And the offence of meeting the girl, which constitutes as grooming, is alleged to have happened at some point between December and February.

Johnson, who joined Sunderland back in 2013, will now stand trial at Durham Crown Court on September 21.
