According to The Sun, the 26-year-old has been on the Gunners’ radar for a long time, but it is only now that their interest may materialise into a bid. The Sun value the German at £18m.

The midfielder would provide some support to Francis Coquelin in the holding midfield role. Despite enjoying an excellent year, the Frenchman is still relatively inexperienced in the Premier League, and it remains to be seen how he responds to a bad patch of form.

Having an alternative will not only add some quality defensively that allows their cluster of creative midfielders to do their thing further up the pitch, but it will also take a lot of the pressure off of Coquelin.

The former 1860 Munich man has been crucial to Leverkusen’s success this year, and has certainly given indications that he has the ability to play at the very top level. Roger Schmidt’s defence was only bettered by Borussia Monchengladbach and champions Bayern Munich in terms of goals conceded, as they went on to claim a place in the preliminary stages of next season’s Champions League.

And while Bender’s own goals tally is uninspiring, his tackling and ability in the air will make him a fantastic addition should Wenger decide to open the chequebook.
