Reports last week claimed that the Spanish international had turned down a new contract extension with the club, with moves to both Atletico Madrid and Athletic Bilbao being talked up.
However, he has seemingly rebuffed talk of an exit by saying he is “lucky” to play for the club, before confirming that he will sign a new contract to keep him there.
“I have one more year on my contract – but I want to stay,” he said.
“I am very lucky to play for Arsenal, and am very happy to play for Arsenal. If the boss wants me to stay, I will – and I’d like to extend my contract.”
The 29-year-old began the season as the club’s second choice left-back behind Kieran Gibbs, but following a shaky start at centre-back, he has since taken the young Englishman’s mantle in his natural position.
Since arriving from Malaga for a fee of £8.3m in January 2013, he has gone on to make 86 appearances for the Gunners, scoring two goals in the process.
