Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain has reportedly pleaded with the Serie A side to let him go, should a bid come in from Liverpool.
According to the Daily Express, the Argentinian has plenty of admirers including Manchester United, Arsenal, and Chelsea, as well as the Reds. However, it is reportedly Brendan Rodgers’ side that the 27-year-old wishes to join.
While it may have seemed unbelievable just a few months ago to imagine the Merseyside club making the kind of bid that would persuade Napoli to let one of the best forwards in the world move on – given their abject season last year – the way that the club have approached this window seems to suggest that they may just be crazy enough to make a bid.
The Reds have already secured Roberto Firmino (via BBC Sport), but still need more strength up front. Daniel Sturridge’s prolonged injury problems severely disrupted his season, and left the majority of the goalscoring responsibility in the hands of Mario Balotelli, Rickie Lambert, and Fabio Borini. However, the trio failed to rise to the challenge.
Higuain has the ability to make something special, and while the lack of Champions League football makes this deal seem highly unlikely, events at Anfield so far this window makes predicting what will transpire during the rest of the summer almost impossible.
