Has Chelsea’s John Terry dropped a HUGE hint that Raheem Sterling could join the club?

Chelsea skipper John Terry has somewhat surprisingly supported Raheem Sterling, after the winger continues to receive criticism for the way he has handled his desire to leave Liverpool. But, is there a reason behind the centre-back’s defence of the 20-year-old?

The former England skipper understands why Sterling wishes to leave, as Liverpool languish in the Premier League table, and only qualified for the Europa League (via ESPN).

“At times he’s been unfairly treated this year with the press he’s got. He’s a young player and wants to play at the very top for the very best,” he said.

“He’s got ambitions to play in the Champions League and continue playing for his country,” he added.

Sterling’s future at Anfield seems to be in the balance currently, with the Daily Mail previously reporting that the winger wishes to leave, having previously rejected a new contract worth £100,000 a week. The motivation behind that rejection has been questioned, and left many Reds fans furious at his behaviour.

And while Liverpool don’t intend to sell, they have valued the player at £50m, according to Sky Sports.

The Daily Star suggest that Sterling wants to leave Anfield so he can return to London, potentially ruling out Manchester City, but leaving Arsenal and Chelsea in the frame, and perhaps Terry’s comments come as a way to tempt the former Queens Park Rangers trainee towards Stamford Bridge.

Sterling is undeniably an exciting talent, but one that has yet to find the consistency required to be considered one of the best, and his end product has drawn criticism from frustrated Liverpool supporters at times this year. However, Terry sees the quality he possess, hence the support, and perhaps feels that Jose Mourinho may be able to get the best out of him.

Similarly, he could be keen to see the winger join the Blues as it will prevent their two closest rivals stealing a player that may just possibly, be able to steer them towards the title at Chelsea’s expense.
