Liverpool will make a last ditch attempt to steal Roberto Firmino, who had looked set to complete a move to Manchester United.
According to the Daily Mirror, Brendan Rodgers will try to hijack Louis van Gaal’s bid to sign the Brazilian, having looked at the 23-year-old as one of the players that could help ease the transition following Steven Gerrard’s departure.
The Mirror report that it had previously been claimed that the Hoffenheim playmaker had agreed a £13.1m move to Old Trafford, however the Bundesliga side’s hopes of obtaining £20m for the player may give the Merseyside club the chance to swoop in.
If Liverpool were able to steal Firmino from United’s grasp, it would be a massive statement from the club, and would arguably help to restore some of the faith in Rodgers that was lost at the back end of last season.
The attacking midfielder enjoyed some excellent form for his club in the last campaign. He scored seven times and bagged ten assists as Hoffenheim missed a spot in next season’s Europa League by just four points.
His efforts earned him an international call-up, and a subsequent inclusion in Dunga’s squad for the Copa America.
