The 23-year-old has often been compared to former Gunners legend Patrick Vieira and has been linked with a move to Arsenal since last year, with reports once claiming that a deal to take him to the Emirates was close to being agreed.

However, the FA Cup winners were put off by Sporting’s £35m valuation and issues surrounding third-party ownership, and subsequently cooled their interest.

Earlier in the month Arsene Wenger had apparently rekindled his interest in the Portugal international, and was willing to include forward Joel Campbell into the deal to facilitate the progress.

Sporting now appear to have lowered their asking price, and Carvalho himself is keen to secure an exit, highlighting his physical attributes and style of play as something that would help him be a hit in the Premier League.

“My qualities suit English football,” he said.
