CM- Will Hughes (Derby)
While Derby’s promotion challenge ended in disappointment, none of the blame for their poor run from Christmas onwards can really be placed upon Will Hughes. The 20-year-old has already made over 100 league appearances for the Rams, and that combination of youth and experience is likely to make him an attractive prospect for most Premier League sides looking to the division for a central midfielder. He is in danger however, of watching his career stagnate should he remain at this level for much longer. Liverpool have previously been linked with a £15m move (via Daily Mirror), which may be perfect for the England U21 international, as long as Brendan Rodgers is willing to give him a chance.
CM- Lasse Vigen Christensen (Fulham)
Fulham’s willingness to give their youth players a chance will surely pay dividends in the near future, provided they keep hold of them. This season, they bravely trusted the youngsters despite coming perilously close to the relegation zone, and Lasse Vigen Christensen has risen to the challenge. The Dane has five goals and seven assists, and is already becoming the club’s playmaker.
CM- Lewis Cook (Leeds)
It was a poor season for the Yorkshire side, but there were a few young players at the club that brought some optimism with their performances. While Alex Mowatt and Sam Byram were fairly established in the squad, the emergence of Lewis Cook has arguably come out of nowhere. He boasts great close control that allows him to run with the ball while evading several challenges, and his passing is making good strides. While Neil Redfearn was happy to use extensively, it remains to be seen whether new manager Uwe Rosler will be willing to give the 18-year-old the same responsibility.
