The Daily Mail claim that Real themselves are close to completing the signing of Sporting Lisbon youngster William Carvalho, and his impending arrival would spell certain doom for Illarramendi.
But rather than looking for a quick sale, new Madrid boss Rafael Benitez wants to run the rule over his squad before sanctioning any moves away from the club.
The 25-year-old joined the La Liga big hitters back in a £34m deal from Real Sociedad in 2013. He has since gone on to make 90 appearances in the Capital, scoring three goals, but he has yet to earn a call up into the senior Spanish squad despite his pedigree.
But the Metro claim that Brendan Rodgers is weighing up a £16m offer for the midfielder, which could prompt Benitez into striking a deal.
