According to the Metro, McCarthy is currently unhappy at Goodison Park, as the Toffees have yet to open talks over a new deal for the 24-year-old. Spurs are hoping to exploit the situation by going back in for the Republic of Ireland international, having previously been interested in him just before he joined the Merseyside club.

And Mauricio Pochettino will let Aaron Lennon move in the opposite direction to try and make the deal happen. The former England international spent some of last season on loan at Everton, having fallen out of favour in north London.

Should they need further persuading, the Spurs boss is also willing to use Younes Kaboul. The 29-year-old was the captain of the side, however The Independent report that he is likely to be relieved of the role, potentially leaving his future up for debate.
