Tottenham Hotspur have announced that they have successfully completed the signing of Atletico Madrid defender Toby Alderweireld.
A title winner with both Ajax and Atletico Madrid, the Belgian international spent the previous campaign on loan with Southampton, where he made a total of 27 appearances, scoring once.
The Saints had been keen to sign him permanently this summer, but the 26-year-old instead opted to head to White Heart Lane, where he has put pen-to-paper on a contract to keep him there until 2020.
He will now link up with a few familiar faces like Jan Vertonghen, Mousa Dembele and Nacer Chadli and Christian Eriksen, whom he knows both from the Belgian national team and former club, Ajax.
Speaking with the club’s official website he said: “I’m very proud to become a Spurs player.”
“I’m very happy to be here and I hope to have a wonderful time with this team.
“From the beginning I knew a lot about it (the club) from Jan Vertonghen, Mousa Dembele and Nacer Chadli.
“It’s a big club and it’s always been a dream to play at a club like Spurs. Now that dream is coming true so I’m very happy, very proud and I will give my best.”
Though the club’s site makes no mention of a fee, The Guardian reported on Tuesday that the two club’s had settled on £11.4m.
The completion of the deal also means that Atletico managed to settle a potential legal dispute with Southampton, who had claimed that they were first in line to snap him up.
