Chelsea on verge of completing cut-price £2.7m deal for John Stones alternative

Chelsea are on the verge of completing a £2.7m move for Nantes defender Papy Djilobodji, according to the Guardian.

The Blues have been desperate to add more defensive depth this summer, and have been linked with John Stones, Aymeric Laporte, and Ezequiel Garay, the Guardian report. However, having had four bids rejected for Stones, and finding, following enquiries, that the latter pair would be too expensive also (via Guardian), Jose Mourinho has switched his attention to the Senegal international, who is set to sign a four-year deal at Stamford Bridge.

And while the 27-year-old would not represent the kind of marquee name that is likely to appease Chelsea supporters, the move represents something of a bargain for the Premier League champions.

Djilobodji was arguably Nantes’ best player last season, and considering the gulf in class between the club he is leaving for the side he is joining, he may well be more content than some of the other targets would have been if they spend a considerable amount of time on the bench.
