Chelsea vice-captain’s future in doubt as clubs line up to bag his signature

Chelsea vice-captain Branislav Ivanovic could be on his way out of the club in the near future, after the Daily Express suggested that talks over a new contract have yet to take place.

The 31-year-old’s current deal expires at the end of the season, and while offering him fresh terms would have seemed a no-brainer based on his efforts during the last campaign, his performances during this current season may have given Jose Mourinho something to think about.

Having failed to deal with the pace that either Swansea City or Manchester City offered on the wing, there have been calls for the Serbian to be dropped with Cesar Azpilicueta moving to right-back – which is his more natural position – while new signing Baba Rahman goes straight in on the left.

Should Ivanovic find himself out of favour with Mourinho, he may decide to consider the options on the table. The Express claim that several top sides, both in the Premier League and abroad, are interested in signing the experienced defender.

And with the Blues continuing to pursue a deal for Everton’s John Stones (via Express), who’s to say that – should he fall even further down the pecking order – Ivanovic will not consider waiting for his contract to expire before he exits Stamford Bridge.
