Chelsea set to battle European heavyweights for Spanish defender

Chelsea are set to battle it out with Real Madrid and Manchester City for the signature of Valencia defender Jose Gaya, according to the Metro.

The 20-year-old was attracting the Blues’ attention in the summer, and though a move failed to take place, it seems that Jose Mourinho is still interested in the left-back.

However, the Premier League champions face serious competition for his signature, with the current leaders of the top flight and ten-time champions of Europe also monitoring Gaya’s situation. Meanwhile, the possibility of the Spain under-21 international staying at the Mestalla cannot be ruled out, as the Metro report that he signed a new contract only last season.

The interest in Gaya is perhaps bizarre, given that the Stamford Bridge side added former Augsburg left-back Baba Rahman in the summer.

However, given that Rahman is yet to feature for his new side, the speculation surrounding Gaya would suggest that the Valencia man would have been Mourinho’s first choice all along.
