Manchester United have made signing Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane one of their main priorities for the next summer transfer window, according to French newspaper Le
Los Blancos president Florentino Perez stated that the Red Devils were chasing the Frenchman, as well as Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema during the previous months (via Le 10 Sport), and it appears that they are keeping an eye on Varane in particular.
The Metro report that the 22-year-old may be available in the future should he find it difficult to enjoy a prolonged run in the side with both Sergio Ramos and Pepe also in contention for a place at the heart of Rafa Benitez’s defence.
However, Le 10 Sport also suggest that the failure to agree a deal that would see David de Gea head to the Bernabeu may have an influence on how willing Madrid are to do business with Louis van Gaal’s side in the future.
Varane would be an extremely welcome addition to the United side. Last season, their defensive frailties could have cost them a huge amount of points had it not been for de Gea’s form.
And while they have looked a much more stable outfit during the early stages of this campaign, the fact that Daley Blind is more comfortable as a midfielder rather than as a centre-back may be exploited against the best sides in the top flight.
