Thierry Henry heaps praise upon Man United new boy Anthony Martial after debut goal

Premier League legend Thierry Henry has heaped praise upon Manchester United’s new signing Anthony Martial after the sensational impact that the Frenchman made on his debut for the Red Devils, the Daily Express report.

Questions were raised about whether the 19-year-old would ever be able to justify his fee – having cost United an initial £36m, which could eventually rise to £58m (via Express) – but he responded to his critics with an excellent goal to seal Louis van Gaal’s side’s victory over Liverpool. His ability to change his pace while also maintaining close control of the ball evoked memories of Henry for many.

And the former Arsenal hero was hugely impressed by Martial’s debut (via Express).

“He stayed composed and that is what I loved about the goal,” he said.

“I call it, ‘freezing the keeper’. He put his head up to look at the goalkeeper, took his time, then put the ball in.

“People were wondering before the game about his price, whether he spoke English or what his attributes were. But he has done his talking with the ball,” he added.

Despite the excellent start to his United career, there is no doubt that Martial has a lot of work to do if he wishes to justify being the most expensive teenager in history.

With Wayne Rooney being van Gaal’s only other out-and-out striker option, the former Monaco man is likely to have plenty of opportunities – especially with the side now back in the Champions League – to prove that comparisons with Henry are not way off the mark.
