He is understood to have held talks with club executive vice-chairman, Ed Woodward, and have informed him of his decision. Following the 1-0 home defeat to Southampton, van Gaal admitted that he has failed in meeting the fans’ expectations.
He said: “I’m very disappointed that I cannot reach the expectations of the fans.
“They have – or they had – great expectations of me, and I cannot fulfil them, so I am very frustrated because of that.”
