Chelsea have their sights set on former Arsenal captain and current Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen as a potential replacement for John Terry, after it was revealed that the Blues are not planning to offer Terry a new deal.

With Terry looking set for an exit, Spanish sports news outlet ?Fichajes reported that Thomas Vermaelen could be the experienced centre-back to replace the Blues captain, having struggled for playing time at Nou Camp.
Due to a load of injuries, Vermaelen started just eight Premier League matches between his final season at Arsenal and his first at Barcelona. The 30-year-old Belgian international has made just six La Liga appearances this season, with Luis Enrique favouring Javier Mascherano, Gerard Pique and even Jeremy Mathieu.
Vermaelen played a total of 150 matches for Arsenal, after joining them in 2007 from Dutch side Ajax for £8.4m. He scored 15 goals and provided six assists, before joining Barcelona in the summer of 2014 for a transfer fee of £13.30m. Vermaelen has been capped 49 times for Belgium.
