Liverpool have made a bid of £7.5 million for Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen. Spanish daily Sport claims that the Catalan club have already received a formal offer from the Reds for the Belgian international.
The 30-year-old has already been told by the Primera Division giants that he is no longer needed at the club and is free to leave in the summer.
The former Arsenal captain moved to Nou Camp in a £15 million move in 2014. However, due to his consistent injury problems, he couldn’t secure his place in the Barcelona squad and could manage only 11 league appearances during the last two seasons at the club.
Barcelona are expected to hold out for a higher bid for the centre-back as they expect West Ham to make a move for their player as well. Chelsea and Turkish club Besiktas have also been linked with the Belgian international recently.
The La Liga club plan to revamp their defence in the summer and players like Thomas Vermaelen, Marc Bartra and Dani Alves are expected to depart.
