A promising young player isn’t always able to break through in a senior squad. Therefore, being loaned to a smaller club could offer that player experience, develop his skills, and increase his confidence.
However, loaning players to other clubs isn’t restricted to young guns, which is proven by the Premier League’s top five most valuable loanees this season (via Transfermarkt).
5. Florian Thauvin (Newcastle United) – £6.75 million
First up is Florian Thauvin. The 23-year-old joined Newcastle in the summer of 2015 for £13.76 million but was never able to prove his talents in the Premier League. During the January transfer window, the French winger was sent back to Marseille on loan, making 13 Ligue 1 appearances.
4. Wojciech Szczesny (Arsenal) – £7.5 million
It was time for Wojciech Szczesny to leave Arsenal for a short period of time when Petr Cech joined the Gunners in the summer. The Polish goalkeeper was loaned to Serie A giants AS Roma, where the 26-year-old has conceded 31 goals in 31 league appearances.
3. Stevan Jovetic (Manchester City) – £11.25 million
Manchester City paid a transfer fee of £19.50 million to Fiorentina in 2013 to get Stevan Jovetic to the Etihad. However, the 26-year-old was never able to crack the starting eleven on a consistent basis and was subsequently loaned to Inter last summer, scoring six goals in 23 Serie A appearances.
2. Lazar Markovic (Liverpool) – £11.25 million
Lazar Markovic joined Liverpool in the summer of 2014 from Benfica, as the Reds paid £18.75 million for the Serbian winger. He made just 19 Premier League appearances for the club and was loaned to Turkish giants Fenerbahce in the summer of 2015, making just 14 league appearances due to an hamstring injury.
1. Juan Cuadrado (Chelsea) – £18.75 million
After paying a transfer fee of £23.25 million during the 2013 January transfer window to Fiorentina, Chelsea never saw the best of Juan Cuadrado in the Premier League. He was sent on loan to Juventus last summer, providing four goals and six assists in the Old Lady’s fifth consecutive title winning Serie A season.
