Manchester United plan two midfield signings, top target identified and more

Manchester United have identified Napoli midfielder Jorginho as a possible summer signing, according to the Independent.

The Red Devils originally wanted to sign Real Madrid star Tony Kroos, but they have apparently shifted their focus towards Jorginho as he is a more viable option to acquire in the market. United manager Jose Mourinho has been left impressed with Jorgino’s performance for title-chasing Napoli side this season. He believes that the 26-year-old can add much-needed creativity to his side.

Since joining the Naples side from Verona in 2014, the Brazilian has established himself as a key player at the club. This season, he has made 28 starts for Maurizio Sarri’s side.

The report also claims that Mourinho aims to bring in two new midfielders in the summer, to replace the likes of Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini.

Carrick has played his last season with United, while Fellaini is likely to walk away for free in the summer. There is also uncertainty regarding Paul Pogba’s future at the club.

Besides Kroos and Jorginho, United are also keeping tabs on the likes of Borussia Dortmund’s Julian Weigl, Shakhtar Donetsk’s Fred and Valencia’s Carlos Soler.

United are also looking to offload a number of players during the summer. Matteo Darmian is on top of the list, and his recent comments have more or less confirmed his impending exit.

The Italian has made only two league starts this season, and he has been linked with a move to Juventus. When asked about the rumours, Darmian admitted that the prospect of returning to Italy excites him.

He told Sky Sport Italia: “There’s nostalgia for Italy and I do miss it, let’s finish the season and then we’ll evaluate things.

“Juventus? This interest is pleasing, Juve are a great club and to be of interest to a club like that is important. We’ll definitely make the right evaluations at the end of the season.”

Another player who could leave United in the summer is striker Anthony Martial. The Frenchman is deemed surplus to requirements at the club following the arrival of Alexis Sanchez.

It is believed that Juventus and Bayern Munich are leading the race to sign the talented striker in the summer.
