Hargreaves set for first Man City start

Owen Hargreaves is expected to make his debut for Manchester City in Wednesday’s Carling Cup tie at home to Birmingham City.

The signing of the midfielder was arguably the biggest shock of the summer’s transfer window, having only made 27 appearances in four years for Manchester United because of injuries. Roberto Mancini’s other summer signings prior to the arrival of Hargreaves only added to the peculiarity of transfer, using his enormous budget to splash out on Sergio Aguero, Samir Nasri and Gael Clichy, yet Mancini is confident the 30-year-old can still step up to the plate at the highest level: “I need to speak with Owen and on Tuesday we will decide if he will play,” Mancini told the Telegraph, “but he probably will.”
