Ferguson backs Jones to cope with pressure

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson insists that defender Phil Jones will stand up to the expectation and pressure he is under, The Daily Mirror reports.

Jones has been likened to Italian legend Franco Baresi and former Spain captain Fernando Hierro by England boss Fabio Capello. Rave reviews have become part of the normality for the 19 year old, who has the versatility to play at right back, centre back or centre midfield for club and country. Ferguson believes that Jones is a steal for £16.5m and when he first saw him in a youth team game for Blackburn, the United boss knew that Jones was going to be special.

The United boss said: ‘I was ahead of the game and recognised Phil when he played against us in Blackburn’s youth team a couple of years ago and was absolutely magnificent. You don’t need to put unnecessary pressure on him, but I think he’ll find his own way all right’.
