Ferguson tells Ferdinand to evolve if he wants Man Utd future

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson believes that Rio Ferdinand has to evolve his game so that he still has a career at Old Trafford, The Telegraph reports.

Ferdinand will be restalled to the side for the Champions League tie against Otelul Galati tonight after being dropped for last Saturday’s trip to Everton. Ferguson has stated that Ferdinand has lost his yard of pace and needs to reconsider the way he defends in order to preserve the longevity of his United career.

There have been rumours of a move for Ferdinand away from Old Trafford and the emergence of English internationals such as Phil Jones and Chris Smalling could see Ferdinand’s place under serious threat.

Ferguson said: ‘I explained to Rio the other day that we have two young centre-halves coming through and I hope I can keep the four together for a long time. Rio is almost 33 and has obviously lost the yard of pace he had five years ago and he has to tailor his game a different way. He cannot rely on his pace any more. That is obvious.’
