Alex and Anelka hand in Chelsea transfer requests

Chelsea duo Nicolas Anelka and Alex have both submitted transfer requests to the club and hope to leave Stamford Bridge in January. Their manager, Andre Villas-Boas, spoke after his sides 3-0 win over Newcastle and confirmed that both requests had been granted.

Villas-Boas told BBC Sport: “The conversation was fair and direct with the players. The transfer requests were accepted but it doesn’t mean it will happen and if it doesn’t happen they will return to full training.”

Neither player’s impending departure comes as a surprise as they have both been linked with moves away from Chelsea in January, especially Frenchman Anelka who will be looking for the ninth new club of his career. Brazilian Alex was signed from Santos in 2004, although due to work permit regulations he didn’t play until 2007, and has made 135 appearances for The Blues.
