Tottenham Hotspur Head Coach Andre Villas-Boas is hoping FA Cup winners Wigan Athletic do his side a favour in the race for the Champions League and beat Arsenal when the sides meet this week, ESPN
A defeat for the Gunners would see Arsene Wenger’s side remain a place and two points below Tottenham ahead of the final round of games of the season, with Spurs currently in possession of the final Champions League place following their win over Stoke City on Sunday.
But an Arsenal win would see Spurs drop to fifth, meaning they would need Wenger’s team to slip up in their final league fixture against Newcastle next weekend, while Tottenham would have to beat Sunderland at home to leapfrog their near neighbours.
Villas-Boas said: “The dream is still alive for us. It’s not down to us anymore but we still want to take it to the last day when we play at home and Arsenal are away. What we will see is a Wigan side who are very motivated. They will give Arsenal a hard game. I expect a competitive match. You never know!”
Wigan need the points for their own ends as well, having fallen four points behind Sunderland with a game in hand. The Latics have to win both of their final two games of the season and hope one of the teams above them slips up to avoid dropping into the Championship. Defeat to Arsenal would condemn Roberto Martinez’s side to the drop.
