Bayern to tempt Chelsea into selling Luiz

Bayern Munich are to test Chelsea’s resolve to keep David Luiz with an offer worth more than £34m, the Daily Telegraph has reported.

Previous reports that the Bundesliga and Champions League holders were interested in the Brazil international were dismissed by Bayern, but it is thought that Pep Guardiola, who took over at the Allianz Arena this summer, has reconsidered his stance on Luiz and wants to bring the player to Germany.

Luiz’s name was originally mentioned as part of Chelsea’s attempt to sign Wayne Rooney from Manchester United, strenuously denied by the Blues, but there have been repeated suggestions that new Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho does not see Luiz fitting in to what he wants at Stamford Bridge.

If Luiz is told he has not future at Chelsea, the newspaper claims he would seek a move abroad rather than join another Premier League club, with Barcelona understood to be his preferred destination. Luiz has just begun pre-season training with Chelsea, having had a break following his involvement in the Confederations Cup, won by Luiz’s Brazil on home soil.

Luiz signed a new Chelsea contract only recently and while Mourinho has publically rejected the possibility of selling the 26-year-old, Bayern’s offer of €40m could be enough to sway the manager’s mind. Luiz has been at Chelsea since January 2011, when he left Benfica in a £21.5m swap deal.
