Nastasic injury forcing Man City back into transfer market

Manchester City will look to sign a central defender, the Guardian has reported, after it was confirmed Matija Nastasic will miss the start of the new season with an ankle injury. Real Madrid’s Pepe is said to be wanted by Manuel Pellegrini.

City also allowed Kolo Toure to leave the club over the summer, the experienced Ivory Coast international signing on a free transfer for Liverpool, and while Joleon Lescott will be given the chance to resume his central defensive partnership with Vincent Kompany, Pellegrini was already keen to add a new face in the area. Nastasic’s injury has made the desire stronger, the newspaper claims.

Pellegrini already has four new arrivals in the squad – Fernandinho, the Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder, Sevilla pair Jesus Navas and Alvaro Negredo, and Fiorentina forward Stevan Jovetic – adding a fifth, such as Pepe, would push City’s summer spending past the £100m mark.

Nastasic joined City a year ago, signing for the then-Premier League champions from Fiorentina. The 20-year-old is a Serbia international with nine caps to his name and made 30 appearances for City last season. He injured his ankle in a pre-season friendly against Sunderland in Hong Kong.
