Lukaku requested to leave Chelsea before loan move to Everton

Romelu Lukaku requested a transfer prior to leaving Chelsea for his loan spell at Everton, reports The Guardian.

The Belgian international has been challenged by Blues boss Jose Mourinho to “tell the world why you left Chelsea” once news of his verbal transfer request prior to the end of September’s transfer deadline broke.

The signing of Samuel Eto’o from Anzhi Makhachkala evidently sealed the striker’s fate at Stamford Bridge, as the marquee signing ensured Lukaku would have to compete with the likes of Fernando Torres, Demba Ba and Eto’o himself for a berth in Chelsea’s starting line-up.

Lukaku, who grew up a Chelsea fan and proclaimed during a school tour of Stamford Bridge that the next time he would return to west London it would be as a player, was convinced that he would struggle to fulfill his ambitions at the Bridge this season, especially with the World Cup looming in the summer.

Lukaku had seemed close to rejoining West Brom on loan for a second spell before moving to Goodison, but the 20-year-old does ultimately see his long-term future at Stamford Bridge. He is hoping that his time on Merseyside can convince Chelsea that he is the player to take them forward from the frontline for the forseeable future once he returns at the end of the season.
