The 34-year-old is looking for a new club after being released by Ligue 1 side Monaco, and according to the London Evening Standard, would like to return to England 18 months after he left Fulham for the French Riviera.

“I spent a long time in England and I keep very good memories,” he stated.

“Everyone is watching the Premier League and I’d be delighted to return,” he added.

If the Daily Express report last month is to be believed, then newly-promoted Bournemouth will be his most likely destination, as Eddie Howe looks to strengthen his squad for their first year in the top flight. However, the Express suggest that the Bulgarian would be looking for a wage of around £100,000 a week, which may be a tall order for a side that five years ago were in the bottom tier of the Football League.

But, there is little question that the forward would still be able to bring something to the Cherries’ side. Most strikers find that their pace is the attribute that diminishes with age, however Berbatov was never really blessed with speed anyway, so he has already adapted his game – which now centres around good positioning – to ensure that he is still a ruthless marksman.
